Stage Craft: The Basics (Day 2)

Stand-up stage craft is very specific. It’s not the same as acting as every actor will tell you. But you can’t perform ‘better’ without performing the basics.

Relentless pacing
Using your whole body
Keeping your eyes in the room
Using eye contact for timing
Articulation
Selling your material
No tonal difference between doing material and interacting with the audience
Facial mobility
Tonal variations
You can see the consequences of not doing these in comics 10-20 years down the road and sometimes forever.
It’s easy to get sloppy.
It’s easy to pick up bad habits.
It’s easy to phone it in, especially if you’re gigging a lot.
But just by applying the basics you’ll see an immediate effect:
A greater variety of laughs.
Bigger laughs overall
Audience control
Access to choices
More applause breaks
Impactful presence
Industry attention
Space to find more tags
Connection with the audience
Positive feedback from peers.
Obviously, each comic will have their own unique challenges.
Learn how to put the meaning back into ‘live’ performance.
Prior to the 1st class please send 5 minutes of material and a recent video. (Fine if it’s shitty quality.)
2 classes of 3 hours
With a two week break giving you time to embed what you’ve learned.

Stand-up comedy is an act of faith. The key word is ‘act’, not faith. The more consistent your ‘act’, the more consistent the response.
